Defining Joy

Well, a year later and here we are again. I’ve started again on some of my plans and hope to bring them to light here but first…a fun exercise that I had begun today. I saw someone give advice on writing emotion and said that they think about it in this manner: If you take away all the definitions of joy for example, how would you describe it? Here’s my attempt at it.

A man sat back in a leather, body outwardly relaxed but his mind tense, his ears open to any sound and eyes tracking any movement. It was coming, so said his wife and so he dreaded it. Not knowing something and being unable to prepare for it was not in his armory of strengths. He pushed his hand through the sparse grey hair on his head and sighed. He resigned himself to shaving it later because there was no sense any longer in staving off the march of time and order.

A door opened at the front of the house and he bolted up, knees bent and ready to move and act in any which way the situation called for. He could sense something coming his way now despite not knowing what it was and he held his breath. Around the corner a four legged beast sprang into the room ahead of him and crouched down with its back resting higher. The young but already powerful hind legs ready to spring, just like the much older man. His eyes went wide at the sight of the beast and his body dropped him to his knees against the wooden floor, pain flared but he barely noticed, and out stretched his arms wide in a ritual that the mind had forgotten but one that the soul had kept close and guarded. The creature taking the opportunity to strike spun and slipped with effort on the wooden floor, gathering traction with its claws. They finally caught, carving an imprint and the creature became a speeding bullet that crashed into the chest of the old man. Its jaw was open and its tongue lolling with effort, excitement and anticipation of the kill to come.

For a puppy there was no greater hunt than the play and wrestle with its new favorite human. The old man wrapped his arms around the pup and tussled with it gently meeting the puppy’s sharp but playful teeth, pushing and pulling the pup as it raced back to him with every moment. Once more the old man became young and the memories of his childhood flooded in and mixed in with these new ones that gave him life and youth and a new reason to get up, his wife had recently passed but he understood, he was no longer alone.
